Hot Interior Design Trend to Follow Now: “Unexpected Red”

New 2024 interior design trend alert: “Unexpected red,” have you heard of it? If not, let’s get you up to speed. The TLDR is it’s basically when you incorporate a “pop” of red in places you otherwise wouldn’t expect. The thinking is that the subtle use of such a bold color will add some variety and unexpected surprise to an otherwise neutral space, hence the term “unexpected red.”

How “unexpected red” entered the interior design lexicon

This term is popping up everywhere lately, having people question whether or not this touch of color automatically enhances the look of a room. Since first being coined by interior designer Taylor Migliazzo Simon (@intayriors) on TikTok, it has received a ton of attention — and opinions.

Popular takes on the “unexpected red” 2024 design trend

Interior designers, color theorists, and your average layperson alike have shelled out their opinions on this latest interior design trend, with opinions just as diverse. One school of thought seems to be that the ubiquity and vibrance of the color red adds understandable attention and steps up any room. While others feel that this needs to be done with more consideration than just throwing a red pillow on your couch and calling it a day. Meanwhile, some people have pointed out that this concept has been around for quite some time; it just wasn’t coined as a recognizable term, like it clearly is today.

Vermillion — a bold twist on the unexpected red trend

Personally, I’m all for it. However, for homemadehighend projects and in my own style, I like to take it up a notch and go for the even bolder cousin, vermillion. Especially in modern industrial looks, a touch of vermillion can add a playful contrast to the raw grit and sometimes harshness of industrial staples, like heavy metals, wood, or brick. Here are some pics from my own dining room renovation, including an IKEA hack credenza with a vermillion wrapper and touches of color that show up in the accompanying artwork and decor.

A fun way to sneak a little vermillion into your home is through hardware accents. If you’re looking to do something similar in your space, Kraus makes a very fun and funky line of modern industrial faucets called Urbix collection that will do just the trick.
