Bringing loft style to the ‘burbs one project at a time.
The home search can be a sobering experience for many-a-homebuyer. Form, function, location, and budget don’t exactly always play nice. So, what do you do when you can’t find exactly what you want? Melt into a puddle of mush and throw a toddler-style supermarket tantrum? Fortunately (for everyone), I decided to forgo that option; instead, I pulled up my (Nancy Sinatra) boots and decided right then and there to make my own little slice of suburban paradise. Enter: the catalyst for Home-Made High-End.

So what exactly does this mean for you?
In a nutshell, it means I research designs, designers, DIY hacks, trends, products, materials, and more with a fervor you can’t even imagine — for funsies. And, Home-Made High-End has become my outlet for sharing that compilation of knowledge, finds, and personal experiences, along with some cheeky anecdotes here and there.
When I first bought my 1970s suburban fixer-upper, my heart was set on a top-to-bottom transformation. The problem was that I had a shoestring budget compared to my ambition. Even still, my tastes would not waiver! So, I dug in and got to work: I planned, designed, purchased materials, and took on as many renovation projects as possible to take that baby from builder-grade ‘burbs to superb. 😉
Since then, I’ve consulted others in a similar situation, who either don’t have the time, energy, budget, passion (read: masochistic nature), or all of the above, to go it alone, which I totally get! With Home-Made High-End, I aim to curate helpful info and inspiration that alleviates that burden, while providing a little eye candy for my fellow appreciators of good design in the process!

AS SEEN ON:
The HMHE Vibe
If you’ve come this far, we might as well get the like and dislike checklist out of the way. If you find yourself running down it with increasing shared enthusiasm, then we might just be style soulmates.
Oooh yeah
- Black, white, and metallics
- Art-deco overtones
- Geometric shapes and straight lines all the time (the modern-day art deco equivalent)
- Industrial features (think metal, brick, wood and other raw materials)
- The marriage of old and new, high and low, unpolished and sophisticated
- An awesome patio view, preferably with a cocktail in-hand
- If you’ve ever said you had “caviar tastes on a cat food budget”
- If you love all things moody and brooding with a razor-sharp sense of humor
Eh… not so much
- soulless, meaningless artwork
- Most colors (controversial, I know, but we’ll get into it)
- Mass-produced aesthetics
- Overly floral, glam, rustic, kitschy, or gaudy (Not MY bag, but you do you!)
Even if this list doesn’t tick off your checkmarks, ALL are welcome here. This reflects my personal taste and, therefore, will frequently pop up in my home designs and some of my selections. However, I appreciate A LOT of beautiful styles and will aim to showcase those things here as well. Ultimately, I say follow the design YOU love — even if that takes you to an exotic weekend at Bed Bath & Beyond. In that case, rock that BB&B getaway, guuuurl!
